Listen to This Is Horror Podcast Episodes with Gabino Iglesias, Delilah S. Dawson, and Jacy Morris | Personal Update: I'm a Father Again

Hello, friends.

It's been a month since my last email when I linked to every single This Is Horror Podcast conversation with Josh Malerman and spoke about my history and connection with Josh. You'd be forgiven for thinking this newsletter is a monthly newsletter. Truth be told, I always intended it to be a weekly but this year it hasn't quite worked out this way. This time around, though, I have one hell of a good reason for the delay on putting a newsletter out …

See, just over three weeks ago my son was born. For those who listen to This Is Horror Podcast regularly or know anything about my personal life, you'll understand the magnitude of this moment for me. My personal life got pretty turbulent around 2020. 2021 and 2022 were the worst years of my life as I didn't see my daughter and was involved in legal proceedings for the custody of my daughter. Luckily and happily, custody proceedings went well and in February of 2023 we saw each other again, and we now speak every week, text almost every day, and see each other at various times throughout the year. I say all this because now, fast forward to November 2025 and I finally have the family I've always wanted. At the time of writing this I am sleep-deprived and my son is in the baby carrier I'm wearing. As soon as I've finished this newsletter I'll be feeding him (or possibly mid-writing if he wakes up sooner). For the next year I won't be teaching and any work I do will be from home—writing, podcasting, and editing (query if you want me to edit your work or to advertise with the podcast)—as I take care of and raise my son. If the work side of things goes well, I hope this will be a permanent arrangement. After all I went through with my daughter, I want to spend as much time with my son as possible.

As always, there are a lot of This Is Horror articles below for you to make your way through as you catch up on the previous month, so let's jump into things.

Hello, friends. One of the most recent guests on This Is Horror Podcast was our dear friend and prolific writer, Josh Malerman. He recently released his first nonfiction book Watching Evil Dead which is part an account of a transformative night in his life, part a reflection on Evil Dead (but you don't need to have watched the movie to appreciate the book), and part as close to bottled inspiration as you're likely to find in a book form. There's writing and creative advice but this is less a...

Hello, friends. It’s been just under a month since we last spoke, and in that time, I have finished the first draft of my collaborative novel, tentatively titled Inemuri with John Crinan. Folks, this one is an absolute whopper, weighing in at over 167,000 words. Given my last two books were under 80,000 words and the two before that considerably less, this is new and uncharted territory for me. I spoke to Josh Malerman last week about his excellent creative nonfiction book, WATCHING EVIL...

Hello, friends. It’s been just over a month since I last sent a This Is Horror newsletter—the main reason being, I dedicated the month of August to finishing the first draft of my novel with John Crinan. Aside from recording podcasts and pre-arranged family commitments, I did very little other than write during August, and I do not regret it at all. Actually, it’s given me a real thirst to write and podcast full-time, something that if you’re a listener of the This Is Horror Podcast, you’ll...
