I was speaking with a friend recently who said they were working for hours on end every day and still felt like they didn’t have time for everything. It’s a common concern and one I empathise with a great deal. It was over ten years ago when I realised I would never do everything I wanted to in a day. I was doing these insane workdays, staying up almost all night in this desperate attempt to get my to-do list finished. The do-list included writing tasks, This Is Horror tasks, podcast tasks, responding to emails, academic pursuits, and so it went on … One day something clicked in my mind and I realised I would never finish my to-do list because no matter how hard I tried, it would always grow quicker than I would finish items on said-list. This was a liberating moment! I found such peace in knowing the work would never be finished and so I was forced to find a different approach. I decided each day I would prioritise the one most important task and if it I got it done, the day was a success. If I got even more done then it was a bonus. The secret is to try to complete the most important task first. Then you can win the day early. To keep myself focused and to keep track of things, I often list the days tasks in order of importance. I almost always have more tasks than I have time in the day but if I have everything in order then I can know that when the day is over I have used my time optimally. As a bonus, I struggle with “turning off” and “stopping work” so I now have a hard cut-off time to stop working, ensuring that I get some rest and relaxation every day. I hope there is something here that may help or bring comfort to you, too. On The PodcastThese last few weeks have been absolutely wild for This Is Horror Podcast.
