Checking in after one month of writing almost 50,000 words | I have a new film manager | Dean Koontz on This Is Horror Podcast

Hello, friends.

It’s been just over a month since I last sent a This Is Horror newsletter—the main reason being, I dedicated the month of August to finishing the first draft of my novel with John Crinan. Aside from recording podcasts and pre-arranged family commitments, I did very little other than write during August, and I do not regret it at all. Actually, it’s given me a real thirst to write and podcast full-time, something that if you’re a listener of the This Is Horror Podcast, you’ll know I’m hoping I can do from December this year (cheeky plug asking you to support the show over on This Is Horror Podcast Patreon and help me make this a reality).

So, what do I have to show for a month of working on my novel?

The story has grown by over 46,000 words from this time last month, so there’s that. Though that doesn’t represent all the words we cut, rejigged, and fine-tuned. At the time of writing, we have just fallen short of ‘completing the novel by September’, but I’d estimate we have a week to go, so in the next newsletter I’ll hopefully be telling you I’ve finished the first draft of the collaboration and am onto the planning of the next book.

That’s how I’m doing things right now—first drafting a number of projects and then revisiting them at a later date. See, I have a big life event coming up in December (if you listen to the podcast, you know—if you don’t, I’ll write about it soon) and that’s why everything is leading towards then. So, in December I hope I’ll have both the Crinan collaboration and most of the next novel first drafted which means an intense period of editing and podcasting amongst other things.

Speaking of other things, since we last spoke, I have a new film manager. My former film manager, Ryan Lewis, is an absolute saint who might just be my favourite professional I’ve ever worked with. The film industry is often shrouded in secrecy and there are all sorts of NDAs that make talking about things openly a little difficult, but Ryan might well have saved my life and definitely saved my bank balance at the time I needed it most. His story development feedback was sharper and better than most editors I’ve worked with and he helped me make excellent business decisions and opened new doors. He believed in me and was always encouraging and passionate. A real ‘yes’ guy in the best way and a whole heap of positive energy that the world needs more of. But, right now, his career is going in a different direction and he needs to follow his passion, which is why professionally, we’ve parted ways, but our friendship remains.

Enter Alec Frankl, my new film manager. What can I say about Alec? Here is a man full of unlimited energy and enthusiasm who read THE GIRL IN THE VIDEO in a single sitting and is soon to read (hell, maybe has already read given the pace he reads) my forthcoming and most compulsive page-turning book since TGITV, WHAT WOULD WESTLEY DO (side note, WWWD is currently being considered by a major publisher and some literary agents, so if you’re a publishing professional reading this and are interested in working with me—now is the time to strike before someone else does). Now, Alec doesn’t just work in the horror genre but in all genres—which is ideal for me given I previously released DADDY’S BOY which is arguably not horror at all but rather a dark comedy.

So, this is all to say that the creative life is one of ups and downs. Before this one-two punch of writing a good chunk of the collaborative novel in one month and landing Alec Frankl as a film manager, 2025 had been a creatively turbulent one for me with moments of doubt and despair, but right now I am at a high point and giddy with excitement and possibility for what the future will hold. I am re-energised, folks! Of course, that’s not to say there won’t be doubt and despair in the future. Doubt is part of the creative life. But so is perseverance and grit. So, if you’re in a moment of doubt and despair, keep going in spite of it because the brighter times ARE coming—when and how, I can’t tell you, but as long as you believe in the potential for there to be light and you keep putting those words down, eventually the light will come into focus.

So, many things have happened since we last spoke.

I’ll give you a quick list of This Is Horror Podcast episodes that have aired below, but until next time, keep believing in yourself, keep championing yourself, and have a beautiful day, my friends.
